General Music
Cumberland's music program is based on the philosophy and practice of Orff Schulwerk, a dynamic approach to music education developed by the composer Carl Orff and his colleague, Gunild Keetman.
Orff Schulwerk is a way to teach and learn music. This approach is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance and keep a beat on anything near at hand. This begins from the premise that every child is innately musical and naturally loves to play, sing and dance. Students learn songs, dances and instrumental pieces from all over the world and from different genres on Orff instruments, but they also add their own ideas to the musical experiences through improvisation, composition and group choreography.
