¡Bienvenidos!
Welcome to Elementary Spanish Class
Elementary World Language
The Elementary World Language program in Whitefish Bay was created to introduce students to world languages and provide a basic foundation for future language studies through games, activities and music. Currently, students at both Richards and Cumberland learn Spanish as their world language, beginning in the second grade. Students gain a basic foundation in Spanish and benefit from the process of learning language, as it develops their intellectual flexibility. Social studies, math, science and language arts are frequently reinforced throughout the curriculum. Students receive two 30 minute classes every other week, totaling approximately 4 classes per month. Fluency is not to be expected in this program.
Students will:
- Develop confidence in learning an additional language
- Learn basic vocabulary and expressions
- Use functional chunks of language to communicate in small and large group settings
- Make connections to primary language(s)
- Use visual, auditory and contextual clues to gain general comprehension
- Develop listening skills
- Participate in basic, scripted writing (in context)
- Experience music and songs from the target culture
- Identify areas of the world where the language is spoken
