Thursday letter from Ms. Heffron and Ms. Salomon: March 2, 2023
Dear Families,
We hope your child came home yesterday excited about the All School Read of Wishtree. The books are yours to keep. A repeat of the information you received yesterday via email is included below.
Spring Parent/Guardian Teacher Conferences: Conference on March 23rd, are optional. Conferences, requested by teachers or families, provide an opportunity to discuss new concerns, or to get updates on student progress on previously established concerns or goals. Teachers will recommend a conference if they see a change in achievement, behavior or social/emotional circumstances. If your child’s teacher is requesting a conference, you will receive an email with scheduling details on March 6th. Scheduling will be open to all March 10th-20th. In person conferences are 12:30-3:30, with virtual conference spots 4:30-7:30.
You don’t want to miss our Educational Equity Informational Parent Meeting on Monday, March 6th at 6:30pm in our Great Room at Cumberland. This event is co-sponsored by our PTO and Cumberland and will feature Mr. Randee Drew, our District Equity and Student Engagement Coordinator.
All School Read: March is National Reading Month! Wednesday, today students learned about the Cumberland All-School Read during fun lunch by viewing this video! The book we are reading together, chosen by our librarian, Ms. Mallmann, is Wishtree by Katherine Applegate! Teachers will also receive a copy of our book and extra copies are in the library if needed. Please check backpacks, books were sent home yesterday, Wednesday, March 1. Please consider filling out a family wish to be placed on the “Cumberland’s Wish Tree”, located in the Great Room. Leaves can be returned to your child’s teacher or in the basket in the vestibule at Door 1. Want to make more than 1 wish!? Extra leaves to add a wish to Cumberland's WishTree, which is located in the Great Room at Cumberland, are in the vestibule at the front doors of school. Click Here for all you need to know about the All School Read or Scan the attached QR code.
Book Drive: You can give the gift of reading during National Reading Month in March. We will have a Book Drive of children's books for the Next Door Foundation and children in Milwaukee! Please gather books to donate that are in good condition - we are specifically looking for books for 0 to 5 year olds, and chapter books for elementary, middle and high school age readers. We are unable to accept encyclopedias, textbooks, teacher’s manuals, magazines, curriculum materials, and library discards. Look for our Book Drive collection bins starting on March 1 in the vestibule at the front doors of school!
Mathematically Speaking: Supporting Problem-Based Learning at Home: We are excited to offer our third installment of Mathematically Speaking written by our WFB Math Coaches Jodi Schmidt (Middle School), Matthew Skinner (Cumberland), Susan Jones (Richards), and MTSS Coach, Beth Sutherland (High School). Our focus this month is to look at why, what, and how math looks different than when we were students.
Warm regards, Jayne Heffron and Rebecca Salomon
