Counseling
The role of the Counseling Department at Whitefish Bay Middle School is to assist each student in his/her academic, personal/social, and life-planning development. Within this framework, the guidance counselors are available to assist any student, parent, teacher or administrator, in a professional and ethical manner. Counselors have responsibilities in the areas of counseling, coordination and consultation.
Class Schedules and Course Selection
Counselors are also responsible for coordination of class schedules and the course selection process. This involves meeting with students to discuss their strengths and areas of weakness. The counselors work with parents, teachers and other professionals to accommodate academic requests and needs.
Serving over 600 students in grades six, seven and eight, Whitefish Bay Middle School believes in the development of the whole child. Our students are able to engage with rich, meaningful curriculum in the core subject areas during large blocks of instructional time.
Additionally, in order for students to discover themselves and the world around them, a wealth of choices in elective areas complement the core academic program. The structure of our school provides students access to the best possible academic program available.
Individual Counseling and Consultation
Individual counseling is available to students through the Counseling Department. Counselors and/or the school psychologist work with students on a short-term basis to achieve personal goals and work through academic, social and emotional concerns.
Counselors and the school psychologist meet with each team of teachers on a weekly basis. It is during these meetings that academic, behavioral and social concerns are discussed by support staff and teachers. In addition, the counseling department may meet with parents, administrators and outside health professionals to assist students in academic, social and emotional adjustment.
Support Groups
Support groups for students may be formed as needed to deal with specific issues. Students may self-refer or be referred to the counselors by their parents, teachers and/or administrators.
Records
A cumulative record of each student's attendance and academic achievement is maintained in the Counseling Office. A request from a parent is required and can be arranged through the Counseling Office. If a student moves to another school district, the student's cumulative records will be transferred upon receipt of written permission from the parent.
Please contact Cathy Collins at cathy.collins@wfbschools.com for records requests.
WI Forward Exam
One of the responsibilities of the counselors at Whitefish Bay Middle School is to coordinate the standardized testing of the WI Forward Exam. The Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready.
Academic Career Planning (ACP)
ACP is intended to equip students and their families with the tools necessary to make more informed choices about postsecondary education and training as it leads to careers. Follow this link for more information.
